Patriot's Pen Essay

Welcome to the Annual Patriot's Pen Essay Contest Informational Page - Sponsored by the Greencastle VFW and Ladies' Auxiliary   Image of VFW's Log

The Patriot's Pen Essay Contest is a national contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

  • Students in grades 6th through 8th are eligible to enter. 

  • Students are asked to write an essay on a patriotic theme (the theme changes each year).

  • Essays must be between 300 and 400 words (words in the title do not count toward the total).

  • The deadline to submit an essay is October 31st each year.

  • Contact your ELA teacher for information.

2019 Theme: What Makes America Great

How are the winners selected 

  • Students' essays are first judged at the local VFW (Greencastle's is VFW Post 6319).
  • The winners of this round advance to the VFW district round (our students compete against middle schools in Adams, Franklin, and York Counties).

  • Winners of that round advance to the state round, and each state's winner advances to the national round with the winning prize of $5,000.


1. Round 1 - Students' Essays Judged by the local VFW.

The winners are:
  • 1st Place - Cash Moon
  • 2nd Place - Sophia McClure
  • 3rd Place - Claire Paci
  • 4th Place - Shelby Zimmerman
